cv joints ns outer

Just had NS outer cv joint changed cos local garage said it needed doing. But the noise when cornering is still there. Wandering if the inner joint is knackered ? Had a feel and at the gearbox end I can clunk the shaft up and down by about 2mm, is this too much or should there be no movement at all ? Lucky I had the wheel off to take a look as garage had used cable ties instead of the metal clips that come with the cv kit, the boot had come away and grease went everywhere !
